During two simultaneous stands in the West Bank and Gaza, demands for the United Nations to protect Palestinian organizations and support UNRWA

Today, Wednesday, the Palestinian NGOs Network called on the United Nations to pressure Israel to cancel its recent decision to classify 6 NGOs as terrorist organizations, and to provide the necessary legal protection for civil society institutions.

The participants raised banners condemning the Israeli decision, and others demanding protection for Palestinian institutions, during two simultaneous stands organized by the NGO Network; The first is in front of the headquarters of the UN Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process in Gaza City, and the second is in front of the UN Headquarters in Ramallah (central occupied West Bank).

Last Monday, Israel issued a military order granting the army permission to pursue and close the headquarters of 6 institutions that were designated on October 19 as terrorist organizations, under the Israeli anti-terrorism law of 2016.

The mentioned institutions are: Addameer, Al-Haq, Defense of Children-Palestine, the Union of Agricultural Work Committees, the Bisan Center for Research and Development, and the Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees.

The participants in the vigil in Gaza called on the international community to support UNRWA during the donors conference to be held this month in Brussels under the auspices of Sweden and Jordan. They also warned of the impact of the political dimensions of the financial crisis on the basic services provided by the UN organization to Palestinian refugees.

Mohsen Abu Ramadan, director of the Haider Abdel Shafi Center for Culture and Development, called on the United Nations to put pressure through international mechanisms to stop the fierce campaigns waged by the occupation against civil society.

Abu Ramadan said – in a speech during the sit-in in Gaza – that the United Nations and its relevant institutions must move quickly in accordance with what is guaranteed by international laws to pressure Israel to stop its decisions and target civil work, and prevent the implementation of its consequences.

In the West Bank, the Secretary-General of the Palestinian Initiative Party, Mustafa Barghouti, condemned the decision of the Israeli authorities to close the six institutions, describing it as illegal.

Al-Barghouti told Anadolu Agency – during his participation in the stand – that we are here today to protest the terrorism practiced by the occupation army against Palestinian civil society and civil organizations that play a major role in supporting the steadfastness of our people, and exposing and exposing the crimes of the occupation.

At the conclusion of the two stops, the NGO Network handed over a memorandum to the representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, calling for his organization’s intervention and pressure on Israel to stop its latest decision, and to protect Palestinian institutions.
