Keto – (DPA):
Ecuadorean authorities said on Saturday that a clash between gangs in a prison in the country left at least 68 people dead and 25 injured.

The attorney general’s office said it had opened an investigation into the violent clashes that began Friday night and continued into Saturday morning in a prison in the Pacific coastal city of Guayaquil.

On Saturday morning, the National Police said an operation was underway at the Guayas N1 detention center to restore order and control of the prison.

The attorney general’s office said the death toll was based on preliminary data.

Local media quoted police as saying that the clashes broke out around 6:30 pm (2330 GMT) on Friday. A rifle, two pistols and 10 sticks of dynamite were seized during a police operation.

The Guayas provincial government, in which the Guayaquil center is located, said on Saturday evening that it had detected new clashes inside the prison.

The country has witnessed frequent violent clashes in recent months, including those occurring inside prisons, and at the end of last September, more than 100 people were killed in bloody gang battles in Guayaquil prison.

In July riots in the prisons of Cotopaxi and Guayaquil killed 21 people.

Last February, 79 people were killed in violent clashes between rival gangs in several prisons
