Washington – (USA):

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken warned Friday that the war in Tigray has put Ethiopia on a “path of destruction” that could reverberate across East Africa, CNN reported.

In his interview with “CNN”, as reported by the latter today, Blinken stressed that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed must take his “responsibility” and end the violence in the country.

Speaking to CNN in Abuja, Nigeria, on the sidelines of his African tour, Blinken said it was “necessary for the fighting to stop and dialogue to begin,” reiterating his call for a long-term ceasefire to enable the provision of humanitarian assistance.

“This has to happen as soon as possible. With every passing day, what we’re seeing is an increase in sectarian tensions that already risk tearing the country apart and spilling over to other countries in the region,” he added.

Blinken called on the Ethiopian Prime Minister to dialogue with the warring parties and work to “end the violence,” stressing that “this is his responsibility as the country’s leader.”

The US Secretary noted, “There is no military solution to the challenges in Ethiopia,” and that “this is a path to the destruction of the country, and misery for the people of Ethiopia who deserve much better.”
