London – (AA):
New data reveal a variant of COVID-19 that is spreading at a much faster rate than beta and delta strains.
Preliminary data shows that the new variant, B.1.1.529, is much more prevalent than previously recorded beta and delta strains.
John Byrne-Murdoch, a journalist at the Financial Times warned: “There is a clear upward trend… This may be just a fading, but that’s how the waves start.”
He added: “Aside from its rapid rise in South Africa, the other major cause for concern here is that mutations in B.1.1.529 – based on what we’ve seen with other variants – are known to be associated with greater transmission.”
