Algeria: Establishment of the Supreme Judicial Council with its new composition in accordance with the 2020 constitution

Today, Thursday, Algeria witnessed the inauguration of the Supreme Judicial Council with its new composition stipulated in the amended constitution in November 2020.

The Algerian presidency clarified – in a statement – that Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, head of the Supreme Judicial Council, installed today the members of the Supreme Judicial Council, with its new composition, in accordance with the text of Article 180 of the Constitution.

It should be noted that the Supreme Judicial Council, which guarantees the independence of the judiciary in accordance with the Algerian constitution, is headed by the President of the Republic, and consists of 26 members, including 15 court judges, and the prosecution; They are elected by their colleagues.

The judges of Algeria had elected their representatives to the Supreme Judicial Council, this December 20, at the headquarters of the judicial councils, administrative courts and the Supreme Court, in accordance with the provisions of Articles 180 and 224 of the Algerian Constitution.
