Hankook Tire & Technology (Hankook Tire) unveiled an airless futuristic concept tire on the 5th.

Hankook Tire’s airless tire ‘i-Flex’ will be displayed at Hyundai Motor’s booth at ‘CES 2022’ in Las Vegas, USA to welcome visitors. This tire was installed on the ‘Plug and Drive (PnD) module’, a robotics-based mobile platform that Hyundai Motors unveiled for the first time on the same day.

The iFlex was developed with a diameter of 400 mm, a width of 105 mm, and a wheel of 10 inches. Unlike conventional tires, there is no air inside, so there is no need to worry about accidents due to punctures, and there is no need to maintain an appropriate air pressure, so it is optimized for autonomous driving mobility, Hankook Tire explained.

Non-pneumatic tires differ in their ability to withstand vehicle weight depending on the material and shape. iFlex is characterized by its design by mimicking the living body to ensure stable driving while surpassing the limits of existing tires. It is designed to absorb shocks from the road surface while driving as much as possible by making the contour of the tire tread in a C-shape like the cellular structure of a living organism. To increase the load-bearing capacity, the sides are organically interlocked with hexagonal and square-shaped structures with different stiffness.

Hankook Tire began research on non-pneumatic tires in 2010 when the Ministry of Science and ICT proposed the development of eco-friendly tires. A company official said, “In addition to iFlex, we are working on various tire development projects with safety and sustainability in line with the concept of future eco-friendly vehicles.”
