Korea’s Saemaul Undong is spreading in Fiji, an island country in the South Pacific. Fiji decided to promote the national land development project by introducing Korea’s Saemaul Undong spirit and its methodology.
On the 4th (local time), Saemaul Undong Federation Secretary-General Kim Seok-jin, International Bureau officials, and Korean Ambassador to Fiji Park Young-gyu held a meeting with Inia Seruiratu, Fiji Minister of Rural Development and Ocean Development, at the conference room of the Ministry of Rural Development in Fiji on the 4th (local time) and held a Saemaul Undong pilot project in Fiji. It was announced on the 5th that they discussed the implementation plan.
Officials from both sides evaluated the results of the Saemaul Undong pilot project in Fiji in 2021 and discussed ways to establish a business plan for Saemaul Undong in Fiji in 2022.
Secretary-General Kim Seok-jin and officials from the International Bureau of the National Saemaul Undong Federation visited Fiji on December 28 last year to inspect the Saemaul Undong pilot project and conduct field training until the 7th.
The Saemaul Undong Central Association has been carrying out the Saemaul Demonstration Village Project for three villages in Fiji from 2020. An official from the National Federation explained, “We are carrying out regional development projects such as our Saemaul Undong in three villages in Fiji: Mau, Silina, and Naimashima.” The Fiji Ministry of Rural Development and Maritime Development has a plan to actively promote local community development projects in Fiji in cooperation with the Saemaul Undong Federation.

Secretary-General Kim said in a meeting with the Minister of Rural Development in Fiji, “The Saemaul Undong has contributed greatly to the social and economic development of Korea today as a successful regional development model in Korea. I hope to do it,” he said.
In response, Minister Ina Seruiratu said, “We will expand the Saemaul Undong throughout Fiji to develop rural society in Fiji.” .
Meanwhile, Saemaul Undong Central Chairman Yeom Hong-cheol said, “I expect that Fiji will take a lot of interest and participate in the ‘Global Village Saemaul Summit’ scheduled for this year.”
