Steinmeier hands over the certificate of appointment to Nagel

The new Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel is now officially in office. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier presented the 55-year-old with the certificate of appointment on Friday at Bellevue Palace in Berlin. The economist had already succeeded Jens Weidmann at the turn of the year, who had given up the post after a good ten years for personal reasons on December 31st. Nagel studied economics at the university in his native Karlsruhe, where he also did his doctorate. From 2010 to 2016 he was a member of the board of directors of the Bundesbank based in Frankfurt, then went to the KfW development bank and most recently worked at the Bank for International Settlements (BIZ). Nagel is a member of the SPD. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) had proposed him.
